COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ecological Economics MSc provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the interconnections between the economy, society, and the environment, emphasising sustainable and just approaches to economic activity. Compulsory modules begin with Introduction to Ecological Economics, which explores the field’s foundations, including the economy’s embedding within biophysical limits, social and political dimensions, systems thinking, and ethical considerations in valuing nature and people. Students engage with practical ideas such as degrowth, eco-social policy, activism, and designing real-world interventions. Methodology in Ecological Economics introduces conceptual frameworks, modelling tools, datasets, and qualitative methods to analyse challenges integrating biophysical, social, and economic processes, while Research Skills develops students’ understanding of social science research paradigms, quantitative and qualitative methods, and data analysis relevant to both their dissertation and professional practice. The Research Project allows students to apply these skills independently, defining and investigating a research question under supervision, while building critical skills in data collection, analysis, and presentation. Optional modules support tailored learning through pathways such as Ecological Macroeconomics or Values and Governance, with Sustainable Finance offered to provide expertise in financial systems, sustainability metrics, global economic constraints, and environmental justice. Together, these modules equip graduates with the knowledge, analytical tools, and practical skills needed to address complex ecological, social, and economic challenges in academia, policy, and industry.
