COURSE CURRICULUM

The program combines core training in data science with a wide range of optional modules that allow you to specialise according to your interests. The compulsory modules begin with Data Science, a 15-credit introduction to key principles in statistics, artificial intelligence and the practical work of a data scientist. Project Skills further develops abilities essential for research and industry, including teamwork, communication and project planning, often using real-world case studies. The major element of the degree is the 60-credit Project in Data Science and Analytics, where you undertake an independent investigation into a real-world problem. This project typically involves reviewing literature, designing a plan, collecting and analysing data, and interpreting the results. Many projects are co-supervised with leading research units such as the Leeds Clinical Trials Unit, the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics and the Met Office, and students may also collaborate with an industrial partner if pre-existing connections are in place. The optional modules allow you to tailor the course to areas such as machine learning, deep learning, programming, business analytics, big data, statistical theory, geographic data visualisation and transport data science. This combination of core learning and flexible specialisation prepares you for diverse analytical roles in academia, industry and research.
