COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry MSc at Leeds combines advanced theoretical knowledge with extensive practical and research experience, allowing students to tailor their studies to specialised areas of chemistry. Compulsory modules include Advanced Topics in Chemistry, delivered through both coursework and examinations, which provide a selection of current topics such as nanomaterials, metals in medicine, planetary atmospheres, and structural control in modern materials. The Advanced Practical, Professional and Research Skills module develops essential skills for research culture, including experimental planning, scientific communication, patents, grant writing, and research ethics. The MSc Research Project is the core of the program, offering students the opportunity to undertake an extended laboratory or computational project aligned with their interests, in areas such as chemical biology, atmospheric chemistry, computational chemistry, functional materials, digital chemistry, and pedagogic research. Students work alongside PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, gaining hands-on experience and access to state-of-the-art facilities. Optional modules allow further specialisation in topics such as ceramics, polymers and composites, nanomaterials, modern drug discovery, green chemistry, renewable materials, machine learning for chemical processes, food safety, colloid science, and food chemistry and biochemistry. The combination of core and optional modules ensures students acquire in-depth theoretical knowledge, practical laboratory expertise, and transferable skills, preparing them for careers in chemical research, industry, and related scientific fields.
