COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Cancer Biology and Therapy is structured to provide a comprehensive combination of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research experience. Teaching is delivered in a condensed timetable from September to April, with core modules including Research Informatics and Dissemination, which equips students with computational biology skills and techniques for effective communication of scientific knowledge. The Molecular Biology of Cancer module covers fundamental cancer biology, focusing on hallmarks of cancer and their impact on disease progression and patient outcomes. Methods in Biomedical Research introduces experimental design, project planning, and ethical considerations for research involving animals and patients, alongside rigorous data analysis. Preparing for the Research Project develops essential laboratory skills, health and safety knowledge, record keeping, and proposal writing. Stem Cell Biology explores haematopoiesis as a model for stem cell differentiation, highlighting modern techniques and emerging areas such as cancer stem cells and regenerative medicine. Cancer Drug Development covers preclinical and clinical development of anti-cancer therapies, including pharmacology, toxicology, and trial design. The Research Project allows students to undertake a four-month full-time laboratory or analytical project, applying advanced techniques and analytical skills in a research group setting. Optional modules, such as Immunity and Disease and Animal Models of Disease, offer deeper exploration into immune function, disease mechanisms, and vertebrate models, providing a broad foundation for careers in cancer research, biomedical science, and translational medicine.
