COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Biotechnology with Business Enterprise combines advanced scientific training with enterprise and business skills to prepare students for careers at the interface of biotechnology and commercial innovation. In Semester One, students study core biotechnology topics including biopharmaceutical drug discovery, pharmaceutical commercialisation, small and large molecule processes, and GLP/GCP/GMP manufacturing principles. Practical Bioinformatics develops computational skills for data analysis, while Research Planning and Scientific Communication equips students with the ability to design and present research. Enterprise-focused modules introduce intellectual property, entrepreneurship, and the foundations of creating a new business. In Semester Two, students gain hands-on laboratory experience through a Protein Engineering Laboratory Project, applying experimental techniques and analytical skills. Optional modules allow students to tailor their learning to areas such as infectious disease, medical diagnostics, sustainable agriculture, and global entrepreneurship, integrating scientific knowledge with commercial application. Semester Three focuses on an independent research project, either lab-based or computational, enabling students to consolidate their skills and demonstrate readiness for employment in biotechnology. Alternatively, students may undertake short business internships with local bio-enterprises through the University’s NEXUS innovation and entrepreneurship hub. Compulsory modules across the year ensure a balance of scientific expertise, research capability, and enterprise acumen, providing a comprehensive foundation for careers in biotechnology, commercialisation, and innovation-driven industries.
