COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Astrophysics at Leeds offers a comprehensive set of compulsory modules designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The Star and Planet Formation module explores the physics of star and planetary system formation, including observational insights from modern telescopes. Cosmology introduces students to the evolution and geometry of the Universe, the physics of the early Universe, and methods for measuring distant celestial objects. General Relativity teaches the application of differential geometry to particle dynamics in curved space-time, with applications to cosmology and black holes. Winds, Bubbles and Explosions examines how massive stars impact their surroundings and drive galactic-scale phenomena through energy feedback. Exoplanetary Systems focuses on the observation, formation, and evolution of planets beyond the Solar System, including the search for habitable worlds. Research Skills in Astrophysics develops essential data handling, programming, and computational simulation skills through open-ended case studies using real astronomical data. Current Research Topics in Physics introduces cutting-edge astrophysical developments and hones presentation and research abilities. The program culminates in a substantial Research Project, where students undertake an independent, original investigation under expert supervision, combining data analysis, mathematical modeling, and programming, and presenting results both orally and in a written report.
