COURSE CURRICULUM

The AI Ethics and Society MSc is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the ethical, social, and political dimensions of artificial intelligence. Depending on prior experience, students begin with either an introduction to AI fundamentals or an advanced computer science module to develop technical skills in areas such as data science, algorithms, and programming. Orientation modules include the introduction to ethics of AI and knowledge futures with interdisciplinary skills training, which focus on collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and cross-sector problem-solving. Core modules explore practical and societal challenges of AI: Deployment Dilemmas examines when AI is beneficial or harmful across sectors such as healthcare, education, and smart cities; Bias and (In)Justice in AI Systems addresses issues of algorithmic discrimination, privacy, surveillance, decolonial perspectives, environmental impacts, and structural inequalities; Democracy at Stake investigates AI’s influence on democratic processes, disinformation, and governance; and AI, Human Relationships and Futures of AI considers human-AI interaction, therapy bots, mental health applications, and debates around artificial general intelligence. Optional modules include AI, Creativity and Cultural Disruption, focusing on generative AI, authorship, and cultural production, and Law and Regulation of AI, examining global legal frameworks. The program concludes with a 60-credit final project, which may take the form of an academic dissertation, policy project, or critical communication project, allowing students to undertake original interdisciplinary work, often in collaboration with industry or public sector partners.
