COURSE CURRICULUM

The Climate and Atmospheric Science MRes at Leeds combines advanced practical training, computational skills, and independent research to prepare students for careers in climate, atmospheric, and environmental sciences. Compulsory modules develop essential expertise, including Observing Weather and Climate: Advanced Field Skills, which provides hands-on experience in designing and deploying field instrumentation, data collection, and analysis, including a residential field course. Advanced Data Analysis and Visualisation for Environmental Applications teaches programming skills to manipulate and visualise complex environmental datasets, while Scientific Quality and Discourse focuses on effective scientific communication in written, verbal, and graphical forms. The Machine Learning and Statistics module introduces statistical methods and machine learning techniques to support research analysis. Central to the program is the 90-credit MRes Research Project, allowing students to undertake an original research project under expert supervision, producing work in the style of a peer-reviewed article and oral presentation. Optional modules allow further specialisation, covering areas such as atmospheric and ocean climate processes, cryospheric change in Ice in the Earth System, terrestrial biosphere interactions, weather system dynamics, air quality drivers, and advanced air pollution science and regulation. Together, the modules provide students with practical, analytical, and research skills, combining theoretical understanding with hands-on experience to equip graduates for impactful careers in research, policy, and industry addressing climate and environmental challenges.
