COURSE CURRICULUM

The Architecture MArch course at Leeds spans two years, combining research-led learning with advanced design practice to prepare students for professional architectural practice. In the first year, students engage in project-based work supported by modules exploring architectural history, theory, building technology, advanced construction, and construction industry processes. Semester 1 focuses on Design Studio 4.1, where students develop architectural designs integrating theoretical concepts with practical considerations, structural and environmental systems, statutory regulations, and building precedents. Semester 2 continues with Design Studio 4.2A, emphasizing fully integrated building design, incorporating complex structures, environmental strategies, and regulatory requirements. Additional modules include Sustainable Cities, providing critical insight into sustainable urban environments; Law, Practice & Project Management, covering statutory frameworks, contract law, project management, and business principles; Building Technology, examining materials, structures, and environmental control systems; and Advanced Construction Issues, which analyses non-traditional construction methods and their applications. In the second year, students focus on independent design and investigative projects, developing creative, critically informed responses to chosen briefs. Modules include Procurement & Risk Management, teaching building procurement processes and risk application; Architecture Dissertation, offering an opportunity for individual research and critical analysis; Design Studio 5, emphasizing comprehensive design integrating user needs, research, technological systems, and regulatory frameworks; and Low Energy Building Systems, exploring sustainable and energy-efficient building practices.
