COURSE CURRICULUM

The Society, Culture and Media MA offers a comprehensive exploration of contemporary sociological, media, and cultural issues, equipping students with both theoretical knowledge and practical research skills. In the first year, compulsory modules such as Sociology of Media and Culture, Approaches and Methods for Media and Culture, and Platform Societies: AI, Algorithmic Cultures and Datafication provide students with a strong foundation in understanding the complex ways media and culture intersect with society. The program also includes a substantial dissertation, allowing students to conduct independent research and apply critical, analytical, and methodological skills to a topic of their choice. Optional modules offer opportunities to specialise in areas of particular interest, including Racism, Decoloniality and Migration, Gender, Sexuality and Popular Culture, Researching Inequality in the Media, Reality TV: Truth or Fiction?, and Videogames and Society, enabling students to examine contemporary social phenomena and media practices from multiple perspectives. Throughout the course, students develop transferable skills such as research design, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork, preparing them for careers in media, cultural analysis, policy, academia, or the creative industries. By combining rigorous sociological analysis with the study of cultural and digital practices, the program fosters a deep understanding of the social, political, and technological forces shaping modern society.
