COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the Social Research MA combines core and optional modules to provide a comprehensive foundation in social research methods, analysis, and theory. Compulsory modules include Inequalities: Exploring Causes, Consequences and Interventions, which examines the origins and impacts of social inequalities and evaluates strategies for addressing them, and Research Strategy and Design, which develops skills in creating robust and ethical research designs. Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods modules equip students with the practical skills to collect, analyse, and interpret data using diverse methodological approaches. Students then choose either a Dissertation or an Applied Project, both worth 60 credits, allowing them to undertake a substantial independent research investigation under expert supervision, applying their theoretical and methodological knowledge to a real-world or academic context. Optional modules provide opportunities for specialisation and include Decolonial and Social Thought, Contested Bodies, Researching Inequality in the Media, Reality TV: Truth or Fiction?, Policy and program Evaluation, and Social Policy Debates. These modules enable students to explore social phenomena from multiple perspectives, engage critically with contemporary debates, and develop applied research skills. Overall, the program equips students with advanced analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing them for careers as social researchers in government, NGOs, policy organisations, academia, and other settings where evidence-based decision making is essential.
