COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the Promotional Media MA combines core and optional modules to provide students with a critical understanding of promotional communication and its role in society. Compulsory modules include Promotional Media, Culture and Society, which explores the influence of promotional practices on social, cultural, and economic life, and The Cultural History of Promotional Communication, which traces the development and impact of promotional media over time. The Dissertation and Research Methods module allows students to design and carry out independent research projects, developing essential skills in research design, data collection, analysis, and academic writing. In addition to these core modules, students can select optional modules to tailor their learning to specific interests and career goals. Options include Contemporary Debates in Media and Communication, Critical Studies in Visual Communication, Television Narrative, Feminism, Identity and Media, Understanding the Audience, International Film Industries, The Reporting of Politics, Communication and Public Opinion, Platforms and Society, Climate Communication, and Global Migration, ‘Race’ and Media. These modules allow students to explore promotional media in relation to journalism, politics, film, global media industries, and social issues. Together, the program equips students with analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, preparing them for careers in media analysis, communications, marketing, cultural consultancy, and related fields where understanding the societal impact of promotional media is essential.
