COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the Professional Language and Intercultural Studies MA provides a structured combination of compulsory and optional modules designed to develop both practical language skills and intercultural competence. Compulsory modules include Skills and Issues in Intercultural Studies, which introduces students to key concepts and debates in intercultural communication and examines social interactions across cultural contexts. English in International Communication focuses on developing advanced professional language skills for global settings, including written and spoken communication. The Research Methods and Dissertation module allows students to design and carry out an independent research project, developing analytical, methodological, and academic skills essential for postgraduate study. In addition to these core modules, students choose from a range of optional modules to tailor their learning to specific interests and career goals. Options cover applied translation and interpreting, including Introduction to Screen Translation, Introduction to Legal Translation, Literary Translation, and Introduction to Dubbing and Voice Over, as well as computational approaches such as Corpus Linguistics for Translators. Other modules focus on intercultural and global issues, including Gender and Equality at Work, Diversity Management, Gender, Globalisation and Development, Managing Business Across Cultural Contexts, and International Organisations. Together, the program equips students with theoretical knowledge, intercultural understanding, and practical professional skills, preparing them for careers in translation, international business, diplomacy, education, and other globally oriented professions.
