COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the MA in Linguistics is designed to provide a strong foundation in both theoretical and applied aspects of language study. Compulsory modules include the Dissertation in Linguistics, allowing students to carry out an original research project and develop advanced research skills, and core courses such as Foundations of Phonetics and Phonology, Foundations of Syntax, and Academic Skills in Linguistics, which equip students with essential knowledge of language structure and the methodological tools needed for rigorous analysis. These modules also foster academic writing, critical thinking, and independent research skills, preparing students for advanced study and professional application. In addition to the core modules, students choose from a range of optional modules totaling 60 credits, enabling them to tailor their studies according to their interests and career goals. Options include Languages in Contact, Second Language Acquisition, Approaches to Linguistics and Language Acquisition, Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis, Technology Enhanced Language Learning, Corpus Linguistics in the Classroom, Teaching English for Academic Purposes, Topics in Phonetics and Phonology, Topics in Syntax, and Managing Business Across Cultural Contexts. Through this combination of compulsory and optional modules, the program develops both depth and breadth in linguistics, giving students the skills and knowledge to pursue careers in research, education, language technology, and related fields.
