COURSE CURRICULUM

The first year of the International Relations MA offers a comprehensive foundation in the study of global politics through both historical and contemporary perspectives. The core modules provide an in-depth understanding of the evolution of international thought, examining key ideas, philosophies, and theories that have shaped the global political landscape over time. Students explore the historical context of international relations, including the origins of the modern state system, the development of diplomacy, and the role of conflict and cooperation in shaping international norms and institutions. Complementing this historical perspective, the contemporary international theory module introduces students to current approaches and debates in international relations, including critical, realist, liberal, and constructivist frameworks, and explores their application to pressing global challenges such as security, human rights, development, and global governance. Throughout the year, students are encouraged to develop critical thinking and analytical skills, applying theoretical knowledge to real-world international issues. The dissertation module allows students to undertake independent research, applying rigorous methodologies to explore a specific question or topic in depth, fostering research skills and expertise. Together, these modules provide a strong intellectual and practical foundation for careers in international organisations, policy-making, research, and global consultancy, equipping graduates to analyse and engage with the complexities of the contemporary international system.
