COURSE CURRICULUM

The International History MA provides students with an in-depth understanding of global historical processes from the late nineteenth century to the present, emphasizing the interactions between states, societies, and other international actors. The compulsory modules equip students with essential research skills, analytical tools, and historical methods through the dissertation, the study of international history in action, and engagement with global challenges and diplomacy. These modules develop students’ ability to conduct independent research, critically evaluate historical sources, and apply theoretical frameworks to understand complex global issues. Optional modules allow students to tailor their learning to specific regional, thematic, or chronological interests, covering topics such as Latin America and the Global Cold War, Eastern Europe and the USSR, social histories of South Africa, migration histories, and the study of Black culture. This flexibility encourages a comparative and interdisciplinary approach to understanding international history, fostering an awareness of the historical roots of contemporary global challenges. By examining issues such as empire, decolonization, global health, and transnational activism, students gain a nuanced perspective on how historical events and processes shape modern international affairs. The course prepares graduates for careers in research, policy, international organizations, and other professional fields, combining rigorous academic training with practical skills in historical analysis, critical thinking, and communication.
