COURSE CURRICULUM

The Global Political Economy MA offers students a comprehensive understanding of the structures, dynamics, and challenges shaping the global economic and political landscape. In the first year, students study core modules that provide a solid foundation in the theories and concepts underpinning global political economy, including the historical and contemporary perspectives on capitalism, economic governance, and the interplay between markets, states, and international institutions. The Theories and Concepts in Global Political Economy module equips students with analytical tools to critically examine economic systems, policies, and the social, political, and environmental impacts of global economic decisions. The Capitalism in Practice module applies these theoretical insights to real-world contexts, investigating the operations of firms, markets, and global institutions, as well as their influence on issues such as inequality, labor precarity, climate change, and development. Throughout the year, students develop skills in critical thinking, data analysis, and policy evaluation, preparing them to engage with complex economic and political problems. The dissertation provides an opportunity for independent, in-depth research, enabling students to explore a specific area of interest, synthesize theory and practice, and contribute to debates in global political economy. Graduates leave with the expertise and analytical capacity needed for careers in research, policy-making, international organisations, and consultancy in global economic and political fields.
