COURSE CURRICULUM

The Gender Studies MA offers a structured and flexible curriculum that combines core theoretical knowledge with practical research skills. Compulsory modules include Theorising Gender and Researching Gender/Feminist Research, each worth 30 credits, which provide a comprehensive foundation in feminist scholarship, critical theory, and methodologies for studying gender. These core modules equip students with the analytical tools and research techniques necessary to examine gender relations in historical, cultural, social, and political contexts. The dissertation, a 60-credit module, allows students to undertake an extended independent research project, applying their theoretical understanding and research skills to a topic of personal or professional interest, while developing expertise in analysis, argumentation, and academic writing. Students also choose 60 credits from a range of optional modules, enabling them to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals. Optional modules cover themes such as Racism, Decoloniality and Migration, Contested Bodies, Gender, Sexuality and Popular Culture, Researching Inequality in the Media, Religion, Gender and Sexuality, as well as quantitative and qualitative research methods, and policy evaluation. This combination of core and optional modules ensures graduates gain a thorough understanding of gender theories, contemporary debates, and research practices, preparing them for careers in academia, policy, advocacy, and social research, or further study in gender and related fields.
