COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film Studies MA offers a comprehensive exploration of cinema, combining theoretical, historical, and practical approaches to film with an understanding of its industrial and cultural contexts. The program is structured around two core components: the Film Arts and Industries module, which provides an in-depth understanding of cinema as both an art form and a global industry, and an Independent Project that allows students to specialise in a topic of their choice, either through a research-based dissertation or a creative, practice-led project. This structure enables students to develop both analytical and practical skills, linking critical study with hands-on experience. A wide range of optional modules allows for tailored learning, covering areas such as transnational East Asian cinema, videographic criticism, Hollywood and its global interactions, cinema in the digital era, film programming and curation, European cinema, critical cultural debates, arts and activism, digital storytelling, script development, and performance studies. These modules enable students to engage with diverse cinematic traditions, explore the evolving relationship between film and society, and develop expertise in areas such as curation, criticism, and creative production. By integrating research, theory, and practice, the program equips graduates with the skills necessary for careers in academia, film production, curation, and related cultural and media industries, while fostering critical thinking, creativity, and professional adaptability.
