The Film, Photography and Media MA provides a comprehensive foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of visual media, emphasizing the interplay between film, photography, and contemporary media practices. In the first year, students study compulsory modules that establish core knowledge and skills, including Cultures of Contemporary Photography, which examines the critical, cultural, and social dimensions of photographic practice, and Film Theory and Practice, which introduces students to essential concepts, methods, and creative techniques in filmmaking. These modules provide a solid grounding in visual analysis, critical thinking, and technical competencies, allowing students to approach media projects with both creativity and scholarly insight. In addition to the core modules, students can select from a range of optional modules tailored to their interests and career ambitions. Options include Contemporary Debates in Media and Communication, which explores current trends and challenges in media studies, Feminism, Identity and Media, which examines issues of representation and social justice, and Understanding the Audience, which develops skills in media reception and audience analysis. Other options, such as The Reporting of Politics, Identity and Culture, and Urban Narratives, enable students to explore specific topics in media, culture, and society, helping them to contextualize their creative work within broader theoretical and cultural frameworks. This structure ensures graduates are equipped with both critical insight and practical expertise for careers in media, research, or further study.
