COURSE CURRICULUM

The Critical and Cultural Theory MA combines a strong foundation in cultural theory with the opportunity to explore historical and contemporary cultural debates. Compulsory modules provide students with essential knowledge in cultural theory, cultural history, and independent research through the MA dissertation, allowing them to develop analytical, research, and critical thinking skills. The program encourages students to engage with key philosophical and theoretical frameworks while exploring the historical and social contexts that shape culture. Optional modules allow for tailored study in specialist areas, enabling students to pursue their individual interests and career aspirations. These options include exploring the work of major theorists such as Derrida, examining the intersections of trauma, memory, and the Holocaust, and studying aesthetics, politics, and postcolonial feminisms. Students may also investigate themes in art, ecology, and empire, cultural representation and anthropology, as well as emerging debates surrounding artificial intelligence and globality. The degree equips graduates with the skills to critically analyze texts, cultural artefacts, and social phenomena, bridging theory and practice. Graduates are prepared for careers in research, the arts, cultural industries, media, education, and policy, or for further academic study, with the ability to apply critical, creative, and contextual understanding to contemporary cultural issues.
