COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Classics and Ancient History at Leeds combines core training in research skills with the opportunity to undertake an independent, original dissertation. The compulsory Dissertation module, worth 60 credits, allows students to pursue a topic of their choice under the guidance of a supervisor, engaging deeply with primary sources and scholarly debates. This module develops advanced skills in research, critical analysis, and academic writing, providing the chance to make original contributions to the understanding of the ancient world. Complementing this, the Research Skills in Classics and Ancient History module, also 60 credits, equips students with essential skills for postgraduate research. It includes training in source analysis, historiography, digital tools, language skills, research ethics, and current trends in the field. Students engage in seminars, present work-in-progress, and receive support in preparing their dissertation. Optional modules enable students to further specialise in areas of research interest, with choices typically spanning around eight research-led modules in diverse aspects of Classics and Ancient History. Language modules in Ancient Greek or Latin, suitable for beginners to advanced learners, develop reading and translation skills, with advanced study offering commentary on specific texts. Together, these modules provide a comprehensive foundation for advanced research, equipping students with the expertise to pursue academic study, teaching, or careers in heritage and the cultural sector.
