COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the MA in Biomedical and Healthcare Ethics, students complete a series of compulsory modules that provide a comprehensive understanding of ethical principles and their application in healthcare. Reason, Virtues and Obligation introduces foundational ethical theories, exploring how moral reasoning and virtues inform decision-making. Conscience, Codes and Professional Issues examines professional responsibilities, codes of conduct, and the ethical frameworks guiding healthcare practice. Autonomy, Rationality and Psychiatric Issues focuses on ethical challenges in mental health, while Distributive Justice and Scarce Medical Resources addresses the allocation of limited healthcare resources and principles of fairness. Ethical Issues at the Beginning of Life and Ethical Issues at the End of Life explore moral dilemmas surrounding reproduction, neonatal care, palliative care, and end-of-life decision-making. Current Developments in Health Care Ethics keeps students up to date with contemporary debates, technological advances, and policy changes shaping the field. The Health Care Ethics Dissertation allows students to conduct independent, research-led investigations, applying theoretical knowledge to complex, real-world ethical scenarios. Together, these modules equip students with critical thinking, analytical, and practical skills, preparing them for careers in healthcare, policy, research, or further academic study. The program emphasizes both rigorous theoretical understanding and the ability to navigate ethical challenges in professional healthcare contexts.
