COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the MA in Audiovisual Translation and Localisation, students complete a series of compulsory modules that provide a strong foundation in translation theory, practice, and technology. Modules such as Methods and Approaches in Translation Studies introduce essential concepts and research methods, while Subtitling for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Audio Description focus on accessibility and inclusive communication. Specialised Translation modules develop practical skills in translating texts across different fields, and Introduction to Computer-Assisted Translation and Localisation and Project Management teach students to work efficiently using industry-standard tools and techniques. Subtitling: Theory and Practice provides hands-on experience in creating accurate and engaging subtitles. Students can further tailor their learning through a wide range of optional modules, including Corpus Linguistics for Translators, English for Translators, Introduction to Interpreting Skills, Machine Translation and Natural Language Processing, Introduction to Dubbing and Voice Over, Respeaking and Live Subtitling, Literary and Legal Translation, Writing for Professional Purposes, and Managing Business Across Cultures. Additional options include projects and extended translations, such as a Dissertation in Translation Studies or Subtitling Projects, allowing students to gain in-depth, practical experience. Together, these compulsory and optional modules equip students with theoretical knowledge, technical expertise, and professional skills necessary for careers in audiovisual translation, localisation, accessibility services, and related language industries.
