COURSE CURRICULUM

The Arts Management and Heritage Studies MA offers a range of modules designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the arts and heritage sectors. In the first year, students undertake compulsory modules in Interpretations and Critical Issues, which establish a foundation in understanding how cultural objects, artworks, and heritage sites are perceived, valued, and debated within contemporary society. These modules encourage critical thinking, reflection, and engagement with key debates in heritage and cultural management. Alongside this core learning, students can choose from a variety of optional modules tailored to their interests and career goals. Options include studies of postcolonial feminisms, cultural memory, trauma, and the Holocaust, as well as practical and research-focused topics such as creative work, performance and collaborative enterprise, audience engagement, and participatory cultures. Additional modules explore heritage and art from interdisciplinary perspectives, including anthropology, science communication, and global cultural histories, as well as contemporary debates surrounding digital technologies, the art market, and sustainable development in arts and culture. Students also have opportunities to gain applied experience through placements or projects that connect them with arts organisations, museums, and heritage institutions. This combination of theory, practice, and critical engagement prepares graduates for professional roles in arts management, heritage leadership, curation, and cultural policy.
