COURSE CURRICULUM

The Art Gallery and Museum Studies MA provides a comprehensive exploration of curatorship, museology, and museum management, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application to prepare students for careers in galleries, museums, and cultural institutions. In the first year, students engage with compulsory modules that focus on interpreting museum collections, understanding critical issues in the field, and exploring the role of history, representation, narrative, and memory in shaping museum practice. These core modules provide a strong foundation in both the intellectual and professional aspects of the discipline. Alongside these, students can select from a wide range of optional modules, allowing them to tailor their learning to their specific interests and career aspirations. Options include studies in contemporary art, cultural memory, postcolonial and feminist perspectives, art markets, ethics, and environmental and sustainability concerns, as well as opportunities for practice-led work, audience engagement, and placements in professional contexts. The course also supports the development of research skills through dissertations and other extended projects, enabling students to apply theoretical insights in practical and professional contexts. By combining critical thinking, research expertise, and practical experience, graduates are equipped to pursue diverse roles in museum and gallery sectors, including curatorship, collection management, audience engagement, and policy or heritage-related work.
