COURSE CURRICULUM

The Applied Theatre and Social Change MA is designed to equip students with both practical and theoretical expertise in using theatre as a vehicle for social impact. In the first year, students undertake compulsory modules that include an Independent Research Project, where they apply research skills to explore a topic of personal or professional interest, and Applied Theatre Practices, which develops practical experience in creating and facilitating theatre-based interventions. The Critical Concepts in Applied Theatre and Social Change module provides a strong theoretical foundation, examining contemporary debates, ethical considerations, and the societal implications of applied theatre. Students are also offered the opportunity to choose from optional modules to further tailor their learning to specific interests. Options include Performance and Collaborative Enterprise, which explores working in collaborative and professional contexts, Arts and Activism, which investigates the role of creative practice in promoting social change, and Arts-Based Practices in Health and Wellbeing, focusing on the therapeutic and community benefits of applied theatre. The program emphasizes the integration of practice and research, enabling students to develop both creative and analytical skills, understand the ethical and social dimensions of their work, and prepare for careers in applied theatre, community arts, and socially engaged creative practices.
