COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Applied Psychology of Music MA, students complete a set of core modules designed to provide a strong foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical research skills. The compulsory modules include the Dissertation, a substantial 60-credit project allowing students to undertake original research in an area of music psychology of their choice. Empirical Research Techniques equips students with essential qualitative and quantitative methods for conducting and analysing research, while Case Studies in the Applied Psychology of Music provides insight into real-world applications, illustrating how psychological principles can be applied across diverse musical contexts. Alongside these core modules, students can choose from a range of optional modules tailored to broaden their expertise and support individual interests. These options include Composition Studies, Applied Research Methodologies, and Short Dissertations or Individual Projects that allow for focused investigation in a specialized area. Additional modules such as Issues in Musicology, Critical and Aesthetic Theory, Music, Wellbeing and its Evaluation, International Research Projects, Short Recitals, and Audience Engagement and Impact offer opportunities to explore interdisciplinary perspectives, practical performance, and research with societal relevance. Together, the combination of compulsory and optional modules ensures that students develop a comprehensive understanding of music psychology, advanced research skills, and the ability to translate knowledge into applied and impactful work within the field.
