COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Human Rights Law LLM equips students with a deep and critical understanding of human rights law from comparative, national, regional, and international perspectives. The program’s compulsory modules provide a comprehensive foundation for examining the legal frameworks and practical mechanisms that protect human rights across different jurisdictions. The Comparative Human Rights Law module introduces students to the similarities and differences between domestic, regional, and international legal systems, fostering critical thinking about how rights are conceptualised, protected, and enforced globally. The International Human Rights module builds on this foundation, providing an in-depth exploration of key areas of human rights law, including civil, political, social, and economic rights, while addressing contemporary issues such as the rights of vulnerable groups, freedom of expression, and the challenges of implementing human rights in diverse legal and political contexts. The Postgraduate Legal Research Skills module ensures students develop advanced research, analytical, and academic writing skills, which are essential for conducting independent, high-quality research. These skills are applied and extended in the Dissertation module, where students design and undertake an original research project under supervision, critically engaging with theoretical and practical debates in human rights law. Together, these modules prepare graduates for professional roles in international organisations, NGOs, or further research, while equipping them with the knowledge and skills to analyse, influence, and advocate for human rights globally.
