COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Policy, Sociology and Crime BSc provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary understanding of social structures, crime, and policy responses. In the first year, students explore urban life and social issues through modules such as Exploring the City, Crime and Society, Identities and Inequalities, and Debating Welfare States, alongside core sociological theory, which develops analytical and critical thinking skills. First-year discovery modules allow further exploration of personal interests. In the second year, students build on research skills and sociological understanding with modules in Sociology and Social Policy Research Methods and Crime, Law and Regulation, examining the construction of crime, criminological theory, and the social factors influencing criminal behaviour. Students also select modules like Key Debates in Social Policy or Central Problems in Sociology, and optional modules such as youth crime and justice, or gender and public policy, with further discovery module opportunities. In the final year, students complete a dissertation, applying their research and analytical skills to a chosen topic, supported by the Research Skills for your Dissertation module, which guides methodological approaches. Additional optional modules allow focused study on areas such as crime and justice, disability, or gender, and discovery modules enable exploration beyond the core curriculum. The degree equips students with critical thinking, research, and practical skills for careers in social research, policy, or criminal justice.
