COURSE CURRICULUM

The Product Design BSc at Leeds combines creativity and technical expertise, giving students the skills to design and develop both physical and digital products. In the first year, students gain a foundation in engineering materials, contextual studies, ergonomics, engineering analysis, basic electronics, and design practice through modules such as Engineering Materials, Contextual Studies and Ergonomics, Engineering Analysis for Product Designers, Basic Electronics for Product Design, and Design Studio 1. These modules focus on understanding material properties, manufacturing methods, mechanics, electronics, and the design process. In the second year, students build on these skills with Design Studio 2, Creativity in Professional Practice, Design for Manufacture, and Advanced Electronics, enabling them to apply design thinking, CAD modelling, manufacturing processes, and electronics integration in complex projects. Optional modules such as Economics and Management provide additional insight into industrial markets and financial principles. In the final year, students undertake a major Design Project, developing a 3D design from concept to working prototype, while also enhancing user-centred design, mechanical and electronics design, prototyping, manufacturing, and business skills. Additional modules include Additive Manufacturing, Mechanical Systems, and Experience Design and User Interaction, which cover emerging technologies, mechanical principles, and human-centred design. Opportunities for paid summer internships allow students to gain real-world experience and develop professional skills in research and experimentation.
