COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics BSc at Leeds provides a rigorous and comprehensive exploration of the fundamental laws governing the universe, combining theoretical study with extensive practical experience. In the first year, students develop a foundation in core areas including mechanics, relativity, astrophysics, thermodynamics, quantum physics, electronics, vibrations, waves, and optics, alongside computational and experimental skills using Python. Optional modules allow exploration of emerging fields such as nanotechnology and exoplanetary science. In the second year, the focus expands to quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, condensed matter physics, electromagnetism, and advanced experimental work, fostering analytical, computational, and research skills while developing professional and ethical awareness in physics. The final year emphasizes independent research closely linked to current faculty investigations, with compulsory modules in advanced physics topics and a major project enabling students to plan, execute, and present original research. Optional specialist modules, such as cosmology, theoretical particle physics, quantum photonics, and molecular simulation, allow further tailoring to individual interests. Throughout the degree, students engage with both classical and modern physics, building the skills necessary to contribute to cutting-edge research and technological developments.
