COURSE CURRICULUM

The Nursing (Child) BSc at Leeds provides a structured pathway to becoming a competent and compassionate child nurse, combining academic study with practical, hands-on experience. In the first year, students explore key concepts of health and wellbeing, developing essential skills in evidence-based practice, ethical and legal frameworks, and partnership working with patients, families, and healthcare teams. Practical placements allow students to apply their knowledge, focusing on promoting mental health and wellbeing while learning fundamental clinical skills. In the second year, students build on this foundation, developing the ability to provide quality care, promote health, and support recovery for individuals with long-term conditions. They learn to work effectively within inter-professional teams, applying research evidence alongside patient and family narratives to deliver care in challenging situations and increasingly complex care environments, incorporating new technologies and digital tools. The third year focuses on advanced practice, including a dissertation that develops research, critical thinking, and evidence appraisal skills. Students gain expertise in managing complex care needs, making evidence-informed decisions, and evaluating the impact of interventions on patients and families. Leadership and role transition are emphasised, preparing graduates to manage themselves and others, understand organisational culture, and ensure safe, high-quality care as they enter professional practice.
