COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Natural Sciences at Leeds offers a flexible, interdisciplinary approach, allowing students to study multiple scientific disciplines while developing specialist knowledge in areas of interest. In the first year, students select three subjects from options including biochemistry, biology, chemistry, environmental science, food science and nutrition, mathematics, and physics, alongside a core module in practical skills that builds laboratory, data analysis, mathematical, digital, and ethical competencies. In the second year, students specialise in two of their chosen subjects, taking a minimum of 40 credits in each, with the option to explore additional science modules. This year also includes an interdisciplinary skills module, focusing on scientific programming, communication, ethics, and professional development, preparing students for careers or further study. Year three continues with the two selected subjects, allowing for a major/minor split or equal weighting, and includes a compulsory research project focused on global scientific challenges. Optional modules in each subject provide opportunities to pursue advanced topics such as molecular biology, ecology, genetics, chemistry, environmental science, and fieldwork experiences. Across all years, the course emphasizes interdisciplinary thinking, research skills, and practical application, equipping graduates with the analytical, problem-solving, and collaborative abilities needed to address complex scientific issues and pursue careers in research, industry, or postgraduate study.
