COURSE CURRICULUM

The Midwifery (Blended Learning) BSc at Leeds provides a structured, three-year progression to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and professional competence required to become qualified midwives. In Year 1, students focus on the fundamentals of midwifery through modules on Midwifery Basics, Foundations of Midwifery Practice, and Optimising Care. These modules introduce essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes, covering evidence-based care, team working, infant feeding, and the anatomy and physiology of labour and birth, while encouraging reflection on professional practice. Year 2 builds on this foundation with modules such as Compassionate Care, Global and Cultural Insights into Maternal Care, and Using Evidence for Practice. Students deepen their understanding of maternal care in complex situations, explore global maternal health and public health policy, and develop the ability to critically evaluate research and integrate evidence into practice. In Year 3, the focus shifts to advanced professional practice, leadership, and preparation for qualification. Modules include a dissertation, Promoting Excellence in Midwifery Practice, and Preparation for Becoming a Midwife, where students apply research, manage care for women and babies with complications, and develop leadership, accountability, and communication skills. Through this integrated curriculum, students are supported to become confident, competent, and compassionate midwives ready to make a positive impact in diverse clinical settings.
