The BSc Medical Ultrasound (Sonography) program equips students with the skills and knowledge required to work as professional sonographers, providing high-quality patient care. Over three years, the course combines academic study with practical training, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of both the theoretical and applied aspects of sonography. Students gain an in-depth knowledge of human anatomy, which is essential for accurately interpreting ultrasound images and identifying abnormalities. In the first year, students develop essential skills in professional healthcare practice, biological principles, and ultrasound science. They learn to operate ultrasound equipment safely, integrate theoretical knowledge with practical skills through simulation and initial clinical placements, and build communication, teamwork, and clinical reasoning abilities. Modules such as sono-embryology introduce image interpretation and fetal development, forming the basis for more complex ultrasound skills. In the second year, the focus shifts to research methods, advanced ultrasound science, and extensive clinical practice, with 18 weeks dedicated to simulated and in-placement experience. Students further develop deductive reasoning skills, linking anatomy, physiology, pathology, and genetics to ultrasound appearances in clinical scenarios. By the third year, students consolidate their learning through specialist modules in medical ultrasound science, sono-pathology, and professional practice across obstetric, gynaecological, and general medical settings. They also undertake a research project, applying skills in audit, systematic review, or original research under supervision. The program ensures graduates are proficient in both technical and professional aspects of sonography, prepared to make clinical decisions, work effectively within multidisciplinary teams, and transition confidently into professional practice.
