COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics BSc at Leeds provides a rigorous and comprehensive education in both pure and applied mathematics, equipping students with strong analytical, problem-solving, and computational skills. In the first year, students gain a solid foundation through modules in core mathematics, real analysis, linear algebra, dynamics, probability, statistics, group theory, and computational mathematics, alongside practical programming skills in Python. The second year builds on this foundation with further linear algebra, discrete mathematics, vector calculus, partial differential equations, and investigations in mathematical research. Students can also choose from optional modules within pathways in pure and applied mathematics, pure mathematics and statistics, or applied mathematics and statistics, covering topics such as complex analysis, mathematical modelling, optimisation, stochastic processes, calculus of variations, time series, and statistical methods. In the final year, students undertake a significant independent research project, developing critical research and analytical skills, and can select from a wide range of optional modules that include advanced applied mathematics, computational techniques, number theory and coding, entropy and quantum mechanics, fluid dynamics, graph theory, differential geometry, mathematical biology, nonlinear dynamical systems, stochastic calculus, and actuarial mathematics. Across all three years, the program balances theoretical understanding with practical application, preparing graduates for careers in science, technology, finance, data analysis, and research, while fostering the ability to approach complex real-world problems with mathematical rigour and creativity.
