COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics and Statistics BSc program provides a comprehensive foundation in both mathematical theory and statistical practice, equipping students with the skills to analyse, model, and interpret complex data across a wide range of applications. In the first year, students develop core mathematical knowledge through modules in calculus, linear algebra, group theory, dynamics, and real analysis, while also gaining an introduction to probability, statistics, and computational techniques, including basic programming in Python. In the second year, the focus broadens to include statistical methods, stochastic processes, and time series analysis, alongside mathematical research and optional modules tailored to pathways in statistics, actuarial science, or finance. These pathways offer specialized modules in vector calculus, partial differential equations, complex analysis, optimisation, financial mathematics, and calculus of variations, allowing students to deepen their expertise in areas aligned with their career interests. In the final year, students undertake a substantial independent research project in mathematics or statistics, developing advanced analytical, problem-solving, and research skills. Compulsory modules such as statistical modelling build on prior learning, while optional modules allow students to explore additional topics in pure and applied mathematics. The program combines rigorous theoretical understanding with practical application, preparing graduates for careers in finance, insurance, data analytics, research, and other fields requiring strong quantitative and statistical skills.
