COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics and Philosophy BSc at Leeds offers a structured yet flexible program that combines rigorous mathematical study with philosophical inquiry. In the first year, students build a foundation through core mathematics, covering number systems, differential equations, probability and statistics, and real analysis, alongside introductory philosophy modules that develop reasoning and argumentation skills, including explorations of mind, reality, and ethics. Optional modules allow students to engage with topics such as philosophy of religion, race, science, and practical applications of philosophical thinking. In the second year, students deepen their philosophical skills through the Philosophical Method module, which strengthens their ability to analyse and construct arguments while integrating insights from mathematics. Mathematics study continues through selected pathways in pure, applied, or statistical mathematics, offering 60 credits of advanced topics tailored to student interests. In the final year, students undertake a substantial independent project in either mathematics or philosophy, developing research skills and applying knowledge to a chosen area. Advanced modules such as Philosophy of Logic and Mathematics encourage critical reflection on the nature and application of mathematical concepts. Optional philosophy modules provide opportunities to explore areas including political philosophy, aesthetics, ethics, science, technology, language, and the philosophy of biology and physics. The program cultivates analytical thinking, problem-solving, and interdisciplinary insight, equipping students with versatile skills for a range of careers.
