COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics and Music BSc at Leeds combines rigorous study in mathematics with creative and practical exploration in music, allowing students to pursue dual specialisms. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core mathematics, including calculus, differential equations, and probability and statistics, alongside a thematic exploration of music in society, which develops research skills and critical thinking. Optional modules enable students to tailor their studies with choices in music, such as performance, composition, music technology, film music, popular music, music psychology, and music business, as well as optional mathematics modules like real analysis. In the second year, students continue developing advanced mathematical knowledge through chosen pathways in pure or applied mathematics, covering topics such as linear algebra, discrete mathematics, complex analysis, mathematical modelling, vector calculus, and optimisation. Music study focuses on research methods, preparing students for independent projects using analytical, practice-based, and empirical techniques. The final year emphasizes independent research and practical application, with compulsory modules including Music Beyond Graduation and a substantial final-year project in either mathematics or music. Optional modules allow further specialisation, with advanced mathematics topics such as fluid dynamics, nonlinear systems, entropy and quantum mechanics, and music modules spanning analysis, composition, critical theory, and performance. The program supports personalised study, independent and collaborative work, and the development of skills applicable beyond the university environment, providing a dynamic, interdisciplinary learning experience.
