COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Healthcare Science (Cardiac Physiology) program equips students with the knowledge and practical skills required to become practising cardiac physiologists, focusing on the diagnosis, assessment, and management of cardiovascular disease. In the first year, students gain a broad understanding of healthcare science principles, cardiovascular, respiratory, and sleep studies, alongside professional practice and the development of critical thinking. Practical skills in non-invasive procedures, including ECG performance and interpretation and ambulatory monitoring, are introduced through clinical placements. In the second year, students progress to more advanced non-invasive and invasive procedures, including functional cardiac imaging and basic cardiac catheterisation, while studying the pathophysiology of cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. Clinical placements support skill development and report writing, preparing students for specialist practice. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through advanced invasive and non-invasive procedures, exploring complex cardiac disorders and treatment options. They undertake a research project, continue practical training in clinical laboratories and placements, and focus on transitioning from student to professional cardiac physiologist. Throughout the program, students also develop transferable skills in independent learning, scientific enquiry, problem-solving, reflective practice, and professional teamwork. Compulsory modules cover cardiovascular science, cardio-respiratory practice, clinical placements, advanced cardiac principles, and research methods, ensuring comprehensive preparation for professional registration and practice in healthcare settings.
