COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geophysical and Atmospheric Sciences BSc provides a comprehensive understanding of the physical processes that shape the Earth, its atmosphere, oceans, and near-space environment, preparing students to tackle pressing environmental and societal challenges. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in mathematics, physics, geology, and computer programming, alongside essential skills in data analysis and spatial mapping. Core modules introduce the principles of Earth and atmospheric physics, rock and mineral identification, and the processes that drive the Earth’s structure and evolution. In the second year, the focus shifts to applied techniques, including numerical methods, environmental geophysics, tectonophysics, and structural geology, supported by fieldwork to explore lithospheric and surface processes, oceanic and atmospheric currents, and subsurface environments for resource and hazard assessment. Students also develop advanced quantitative, computational, and analytical skills, including programming in Python. In the final year, students undertake an independent research dissertation, exploring topics such as volcanic systems, earthquakes, or climate dynamics, complemented by modules on Earth observation, integrated fieldwork, energy resources, and the structure and dynamics of the planet from core to atmosphere. Optional modules allow specialization in areas such as volcanology, engineering geology, climate processes, and geothermal energy. The degree combines theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and advanced analytical skills, preparing graduates for research, industry, and policy roles in environmental, geophysical, and atmospheric sciences.
