COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geology BSc program provides a comprehensive understanding of the Earth’s structure, history, and dynamic processes while equipping students with practical and professional skills for careers in geoscience. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge of Earth materials, surface processes, tectonics, and the evolution of life, alongside hands-on experience in laboratories and fieldwork, learning to identify rocks, minerals, and sedimentary features, and applying GIS and quantitative reasoning. Year two builds on these foundations, exploring petrology, geochemistry, palaeoenvironmental analysis, subsurface processes, global tectonics, and sedimentary basins, while emphasizing advanced fieldwork, analytical skills, and Python programming for data analysis. Students also learn about resources from rocks and minerals, bridging scientific understanding with societal and economic applications, including critical minerals for low-carbon technologies. In the final year, students undertake an independent field-based dissertation, applying research, mapping, and analytical skills to real-world geological problems. Core modules cover contemporary debates in geoscience and advanced field skills, often through international field trips. Optional modules allow specialization in areas such as volcanology, ore deposits, geothermal energy, geodynamics, environmental risk, groundwater, and engineering geology. The program combines rigorous scientific knowledge with practical experience, preparing graduates for careers in energy, resources, environmental management, hazard assessment, and geoscience research.
