COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography with Environmental Mathematics BSc at Leeds combines physical geography with advanced quantitative skills to provide a comprehensive understanding of Earth’s systems and processes. In the first year, students build a foundation in core physical geography concepts, environmental change, and the interactions between humans and the environment, alongside introductory environmental mathematics. Compulsory modules cover major global challenges, digital geographies, fieldwork, and advanced mathematics techniques, while optional modules allow exploration of topics such as dynamic landscapes, population and society, and geopolitics. In the second year, students continue to develop their skills in environmental mathematics, data analysis, GIS, remote sensing, and research methods, with the opportunity to participate in residential fieldwork and specialised optional modules. Career skills training is integrated to prepare students for future employment. In the final year, students undertake an independent research project through a physical geography dissertation, applying advanced techniques in statistics, computer simulation, and Python programming to model and analyse environmental processes. Optional modules enable further specialisation in areas such as water science, glaciers, biosphere dynamics, global environmental challenges, and sustainable development. The course equips graduates with strong analytical, quantitative, and practical skills, allowing them to simulate environmental systems, assess past and future changes, and address complex real-world environmental problems.
