COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Geoscience BSc provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the Earth’s surface and shallow subsurface processes, integrating geology, geomorphology, and environmental science. In the first year, students build a foundation in geoscience, exploring the Earth as a dynamic, habitable planet, and studying tectonics, magmatism, glacial cycles, and mountain building. Core modules focus on understanding Earth materials, sedimentary and tectonic processes, the evolution of life, and the role of geoscientists in society, with strong practical and field-based components that develop skills in observation, data collection, GIS, teamwork, and professional reporting. Year two expands on these foundations, emphasizing palaeoenvironmental analysis, shallow subsurface investigation, contaminated environments, geomorphology, sedimentary basins, and GIS applications, while building professional and transferable skills for research and industry. Fieldwork and hands-on laboratory experience remain central, fostering three-dimensional thinking and applied problem-solving. In the final year, students undertake advanced modules such as 3D geo-model construction, geothermal energy, Quaternary environmental change, engineering geology, sedimentology, and groundwater studies, applying knowledge to real-world environmental and industrial challenges. Optional modules allow specialisation in areas like past global environmental systems, environmental risk, energy, and Earth observation. Across the program, students develop analytical, technical, and research skills, preparing them for careers in environmental consulting, resource management, engineering, and sustainability-focused roles.
