COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ecology and Conservation Biology BSc at Leeds equips students with a deep understanding of ecological processes and conservation challenges, combining practical fieldwork, laboratory research, and theoretical study. In the first year, students explore core topics such as ecology, biodiversity, evolution, and genetics, alongside practical skills through laboratory work and a coastal and upland habitats field course. Optional modules allow students to broaden their understanding of sustainability, climate change, vertebrate evolution, and applied biology. In the second year, students build on this foundation, specialising in population, community, and conservation ecology while developing experimental design and data analysis skills. Field courses focus on Mediterranean ecology in Spain and urban ecology and conservation, highlighting biodiversity in natural and human-dominated environments. Optional modules cover wildlife management, plant science, climate change, and biodiversity management, with opportunities for work placements or study abroad. In the final year, students undertake advanced modules in ecology and conservation science while completing an independent research project under expert supervision, allowing them to investigate topics such as marine conservation, climate-change ecology, or animal behavioural ecology. Additional optional modules include environmental law, plant science, evolution, behaviour, and international field courses. This integrated approach develops the knowledge, analytical skills, and practical experience necessary for careers in conservation, research, environmental management, and sustainability.
