COURSE CURRICULUM

The Data Science BSc at Leeds is structured to provide a comprehensive and progressive education across three years, combining mathematics, computing, and communication skills to prepare students for real-world data challenges. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in linear algebra, calculus, probability and statistics, computational mathematics, and programming, alongside an introduction to data science principles, information theory, data visualisation, GIS, NLP, and social science perspectives. This grounding equips students with essential analytical, computational, and communication skills. In the second year, the focus shifts to applying these foundations to real-world problems, with modules in machine learning, neural networks, statistical inference, networks and complex systems, object-oriented programming, software engineering, stochastic processes, and time series analysis. Students also have opportunities to tailor their studies with optional and discovery modules to explore specific interests. The final year emphasizes advanced topics, including deep learning, explainable AI, and data curation and governance, while students undertake a substantial independent dissertation project that integrates their technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and analytical skills to address a practical data science problem. Optional modules in applied mathematics, statistics, and discovery areas further allow students to specialise and gain interdisciplinary experience. Overall, the program prepares graduates to handle complex data challenges and pursue careers across diverse industries.
