COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry and Mathematics BSc at Leeds University provides an integrated study of two fundamental scientific disciplines, combining a thorough grounding in chemistry with advanced mathematical techniques. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation in modern chemistry, covering electronic structure, kinetics, thermodynamics, organic chemistry, and materials, alongside practical laboratory skills and research experience. Mathematical studies include core calculus, linear algebra, probability, and statistics, equipping students with the analytical skills needed to tackle complex scientific problems. In the second year, students build on these foundations, selecting specialized pathways in chemistry, such as organic, inorganic and materials, or physical chemistry, while continuing in applied mathematics, statistics, or mathematical biology. Core chemistry modules explore spectroscopy, chromatography, chemical kinetics, thermodynamics, and molecular structure, complemented by practical and computational laboratory work. Mathematics modules cover vector calculus, differential equations, mathematical modelling, stochastic processes, and optimisation, providing the tools to analyse chemical phenomena quantitatively. In the final year, students undertake a substantial research project in either chemistry or mathematics, developing independent research, data analysis, and problem-solving skills. Optional advanced modules in areas such as quantum mechanics, fluid dynamics, nonlinear systems, and big data analytics allow students to tailor their studies to personal interests and career aspirations, preparing them for interdisciplinary scientific research or industry roles.
