COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biomedical Sciences BSc at Leeds provides a comprehensive understanding of human health and disease, integrating knowledge of body systems, cellular processes, and experimental approaches used in biomedical research. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, microbiology, and neuroscience, alongside practical laboratory and research skills, preparing them for more specialised study in later years. Core modules focus on human body systems, cellular processes, the nervous system, pharmacology, and collaborative problem-solving in health-related contexts, with optional modules including immunology, genetics, microbiology, and nutrition. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of biomedical concepts such as cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurophysiology, molecular pharmacology, regenerative medicine, and tissue engineering, while developing advanced experimental, analytical, and professional skills. Opportunities for industrial placements, study abroad, or combined study and work abroad are also available. In the final year, the focus is on the independent Capstone Research Project, allowing students to design and conduct research under expert supervision, applying their knowledge to contemporary challenges in biomedical sciences. Complementary optional modules cover topics such as cancer biology, neurophysiology, reproductive medicine, diet and cardiovascular health, and the use of animal models in research. The program equips graduates with the skills, knowledge, and practical experience to pursue careers in research, healthcare, or further study.
