COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology degree at Leeds provides a comprehensive understanding of life on Earth, from molecular processes to ecology, with opportunities to specialise in areas such as Zoology, Genetics, or Ecology. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in topics including genetics, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, and cell biology, complemented by laboratory and fieldwork to develop practical and analytical skills. Field courses and modules such as Living Planet, Coastal and Upland Habitats, and Using Biology to Feed the World emphasise real-world applications of biological knowledge, while optional modules allow exploration of neuroscience, immunology, and microbial diversity. In the second year, students expand their expertise through compulsory modules on plant biology, evolution, adaptation, and behaviour, while selecting from a wide range of optional modules including animal physiology, conservation, omics, and bioinformatics, enabling tailored study aligned with personal interests. Year three focuses on independent research projects, advanced topics in plant science, behaviour, ecology, evolution, genetics, and conservation, providing practical experience and specialist knowledge. Field courses, including study opportunities in South Africa, and modules on sustainable animal science and human genetics, allow students to engage with contemporary research challenges. Throughout the degree, students develop critical scientific skills, research competence, and problem-solving abilities, preparing them for careers in research, conservation, biotechnology, healthcare, and environmental management.
